Hi, I’m Sohee Kim, Media Production at Coventry University and now I’m studying Madrid Spain at Carlos III University for Erasmus.

Before Erasmus

-Starting Erasmus

• Why I choose Erasmus and Spain?

So, today I going to talk about my Erasmus year. Before I start, I think I need to talk about why I wanna do Erasmus year and why I choose Spain. To be honest, I Planned the Erasmus year before I entrance the Coventry University. I heard there is a system in Coventry University which is studying another country when we finished year2. It called a sand witch year. I thought it is a good chance to study globally. I came to the UK because I wanna study more globally and widely. Basically, I hope I will be a creative person. For this, Experiences are signified. The Erasmus Year is good for getting a new experience. Then why I choose Spain? The reason is my experienced in Spain Barcelona. I‘ve been Barcelona in Spain 1 year ago. It was perfect like everything like weather, people, feeling, and atmosphere. It felt like I need to come back and Spain draws me to come back. Also, I really wanna learn another language not English and Korean. Spanish was the best one. And I really satisfied with this choice. If I go back, I choose the same way.

• Which University and Why?

So, I choose Madrid Spain Carlos III University media course. The first time, I didn’t know anything about Spain and Spain University. So, I did some research. I researched University that I can go to in Spain. I heard this university is good for study and the place is safe and really suit for studying. In addition, there are many international students and they have a very well organized program for them.

• Plan, Goal and Things I want to do

This is my first time to get to another university and studying another country. So, I was kinda scared. Even though I don’t speak Spanish well. I had no idea how to live there. But, I thought the knowledge of Spain is the best way I remove my fear and get confidence. I determined I will spend this Erasmus year very profitable. Therefore, I planned many things.

First, I planned to learn Screenwriting. In a media course, I can choose what I want to study. This is a very good add vantage for Erasmus. I can choose anything else in the media. There are media culture, media communication, and filming something like that. Through this chance, I wanna get through something that I didn’t know or I couldn’t do. I wanna fill my weak part and develop my skills.

It was screenwriting. I was quite worried about how to write a script. I haven’t learned how to write a proper script, especially in English. I can do pre-production and filming. But, without ideas and script, It is useless. So, the script is a very important part of processing a film. By this chance, I wanna learn about this skill.

Second, I wanna learn the media theoretical part. In Coventry, I learned many practical things. So, I wanna get a different study way of media. I feel like I finally get a full understanding of media practical and theoretical.

Of course, travel is quite an important part of me. I really wanted to travel to Madrid. Leaving Madrid is good for the travel city of Madrid. Before I get there, I already made a planner of my travel schedule and the place I should go.

Also, Relationship is an essential part. I made many friends in the UK, I really want to meet Spanish friends. I’m interested in their culture. What they eat and what is their traditional and even though their language.

After Erasmus

• What I’ve achieved through Erasmus year

Looking back on my Erasmus year in Spain, I t was diverse, plentiful, and Challenge.

I’ve got many things and achieved in various parts. So, I want to tell you my best things.

So, First, When I’ve done my course called Screenwriting, Finally, I made my own proper script and I planned to make a film for this script. Maybe for my FMP next year. This course makes me develop my skill and weakness. Also, It helps for my future. It’ll be really good for my FMP. I developed my screenwriting skills and how to make a proper script well.

Besides, I got writing skills. Through this course, I advanced myself. I can’t believe it. Because I lost my way of writing script. Now I feel so happy and I’m really enjoying writing a script. These days when I feel bored, I try to organize ideas and make a script. There were things that I hated most. I really struggled to make a script and collect ideas. I don’t even like writing, always try to escape writing. But I realized, I didn’t face my lacking part and I didn’t try to learn about this. Through this course, I feel I like writing, but I needed some help to teach me. Maybe, Best for this year is I chose the Screenwriting course. In addition, I feel like I wanna be a writer in the media field. It makes me get a new dream.

A theoretical study is making me full of media understanding. Before I get there, I’m quite worried about my knowledge of media. It’s really good to learn practical things. It relates to my job skills right away. However, In my opinion, the knowledge and theoretical things also affected my skill. I felt I need to study more about books and media theoretical. Through the media and communication course, I got many basic media theoretical. Media history, media development, and how to communicate media something like that. It makes me filling lost part of studying media. I am finally full of knowledge about media. So, I bought a book called ‘ Media landscape’ to get more about it. And with this study, I can use it for my 3 years. Due to this study, I also developed essay skills. How to make a proper essay Harvard style, Oxford style. How to make a good introduction, body, conclusion. It worth it for me.

The Madrid was really good. I lived there, so easy to travel without any costs. And one good thing is they opened many places even in this situation. So, I went to many places like the Prado Museum, Church, Kingdom of Spain, and many restaurants. The world is wide. I feel like I really stuck in my world. There are so many things I need to see and I must experience.

Not many friends I’ve made in Spain, but some of my friends and I hung out and had some dinner. Because of the restriction, we couldn’t meet often, but still, I met them and tried to learn Spanish and their Culture. They introduced their traditional food and slangs something like that. It really helps me to understand Spain and Spanish. Also, due to living here, I’ve got many cultures, food, and traditional things in Spain. Like Christmas and happy new year.

My Spanish speaking is really improving. Spanish is really kind and good. They even say bad words when I don’t understand Spanish. They always explain very well. I really wanna go back and sometimes I wanna live there again. One year is too short, to be honest.

And the campus was so beautiful. Big and they have a good library, cafeteria, and buildings. It made me I'm in the movie and I’m studying in university in Spain.

If I didn’t choose Erasmus, when can I go there and study???

• Hard times and problems

I’ve got many achievements and good things through this Erasmus year. But not always are bright. There is racism, of course, some prejudice against Asians. I don’t care what they say but it makes me feel bad. Also, no international student come to the uni this year. So I am the only one who gets university, especially as an Erasmus student and Asian. I arrived in Spain very late. As you know, it’s really hard to get a visa in this circumstance. But, Spain Embassy always canceled my visa appointment and it delayed so many times. Then, I got to Spain quite late 1 month later. That makes me more awkward in class. Everyone knows each other except me. So the first time really hard to get close to them. This year many people don’t come to uni because it’s dangerous. So, I feel more lonely in Spain.

• What I learned from this difficulty, What I developed

Through this Erasmus year, I decided to go back to Spain again. I’m interested in Spain and Spanish. When I graduate, I will go back to Madrid and study Spanish more. Also,I learned attitude about just do it even if everyone doesn’t want to do it. If I scared about doing something because no one goes there, I couldn't get anything and I am the same person as others. I got confidence for anything now, to be honest. I’m sure, I can do it, I can make it. This Erasmus year was a hard time but it gave me the confidence to do something and feel very proud. I get through this hard time, what shouldn’t I do? I am really thankful for this opportunity.

Surprisingly, the theoretical study is really suited for me. I came to media production because I don’t like studying with a book and essay. I wanted to learn more practical and can use at a job right away. But after2 years in Coventry University, studying words is important too. They can’t take it out in media fields. And I studied theoretical parts in UC3M, it is really mine things. So fun to write an essay and read books. It makes me smarter and more clever. And also, I mentioned it, I found I kinda like writing.

-Ending Erasmus

My Erasmus Year is quite a different and difficult. The Dramatic situation was affected and many obstacles made me exhausting and hard to live. However, I traveled many cities so I experienced many places. I made new relationship and learn their culture, traditional, and language. Also, It filled my weakness part. I wanna learn Spanish and want to go back to Spain soon. Always can’t be perfect, just a few days are good is good. Overall, my Erasmus year was perfect and very good. I really recommend this to everyone and it was the best opportunity. Thanks to CGE and Coventry university.
